Scripture Read:
Genesis 31 - 34
Insight Verse(s):
32:9 Then Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you’: 10 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies. 11 Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and attack me and the mother with the children. 12 For You said, ‘I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’”
Insight Gained:
Jacob prays to God in the most magnificent way. First he addresses God, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac." Then He thanks God for all he has received and he asks for what he wants or needs. I am too often in a hurry to get into my prayer time that I forget that God wants me to remember my gifts and remember who he is. I need to begin my prayer time more like Jacob, addressing God as my father and my fathers father. I need to remember the gifts I have received and I need to thank God for those gifts. I need to remember to focus on God and not just my wants and needs. God has given me promises and I need to remember them in prayer.
My Prayer to God:
Lord God my father and my fathers father, how majestic is your name in all the earth. It is you who has delivered me from my sin and it is you who has blesses me all of my years. Please help me when I pray to remember all you are teaching me.
